Mathdroid

Mathdroid turns your phone into a scientific calculator.  It can do all the basic functions any calculator can, as well as some more advanced calculations such as algebra and trigonometry.    The multi-line display allows you to see your last three equations, which is incredibly helpful in coalition with the copy and paste feature.  Mathdroid isn’t going to replace your TI-89 math majors, but for the rest of you it is a free alternative to a very expensive calculator you’re barely going to use anyway.  Download Mathdroid if you need to use a calculator infrequently.

StudyDroid flashcards

StudyDroid flashcards is the perfect on-the-go companion for the flashcard-making studier.  Suprisingly, this app enables you to make flashcards on your phone.  You can make packs of cards with fronts and backs, and easily flip through them.  Once you have a card down, mark it as known and it will automatically go to the back of the pack.  Additionally, you can shuffle the pack, or display all fronts/backs of the cards.  The main screen will let you know the ratio of known to unkown cards in each pack.

While this is all cool, where StudyDroid truly shines is with online syncing.  By signing up for a free account, you can do all the creation online, then sync it to your phone for studying anytime.  This is infinitely easier than typing up flashcards on your phone’s keypad.  Bonus feature – ability to share and download user packs, so you probably won’t have to create one anyway!  Download StudyDroid if you use flashcards to study.


CoursePro

CoursePro is an all encompassing app for college students that will keep you on top off your courses and assignments.  With minimal setup, CoursePro will not only remind you when your assignments are due, but it will also allow keep track of your grades.  To get started, you add all your courses.  Then, for each specific course, you can add assignment types (homework, quizzes, exams), the percentage they factor into your grade, and how many are dropped.  An example would be exams make up 60% of my grade, with the lowest one being dropped.  Then, within each assignment type, you can add specific assignments.  So, you add in the first exam, CoursePro will remind you when its coming up, then you can add your grade in afterwards.

Once you start adding grades in, CoursePro will accurately calculate your exact grade in a course based on the weight of each assignment.  Pretty cool.  Additionally, you can view your GPA for each course, the semester, and even your cumulative GPA if you desire.  Bonus feature – ability to sort assignments by completion.  With CoursePro in your pocket, you will always know when upcoming assignments are due, as well as the grade you’ll need on the final to bump your average up to that elusive 89.5% for the A-.  Download this app if your a student who wants to stay on top of school.

170,000+ Recipes BigOven

As the name indicates, this cook book app by BigOven has more recipes than you can possibly make.  You can search through this enormous collection of recipes by ingredient or course (main dish, side, dessert, etc…).  Once you select a recipe, BigOven presents you with a list of all the necessary ingredients, as well as instructions on how to fully prepare them.   Additionally, you can view ratings and read user reviews on each recipe.  By signing up for a free account, you can save your favorites and browse bigoven.com.  Bonus feature – Leftover Wizard, which will combine ingredients you put in to give you the best possible meal.  BigOven is a great app for the at home chef, or anyone trying to impress with their cooking.

OpenTable

OpenTable is the perfect app for those that like to go out to eat.  By selecting a date, time, and party size, you can make reservations at pretty much any restaurant that takes them.  By inputing your selections, OpenTable will present you with your preferred number of options, each with a distance from you, price range, and cuisine category.  Once you pick out a resteraunt, you can select a time slot from the available options and make a reservation.  If you create a free account, that’s all you have to do; if not, you must also type in your name and number.

If you are unsure of a restaurant, you can read a blurb about it, get info on parking, read extensive user reviews and ratings (even has noise level rating), and look at a full menu.  The easy-to-use user interface also allows you to search by location or restaurant name.  If you sign up for an account, you can gain reward points netting you coupons.  OpenTable is a great app that lets you make reservations without any hassle.  This is a must download for those that frequently partake in fine dining.

Urbanspoon

Urbanspoon is a great app if you have trouble deciding on a place to ear, or if you just want to try out some new places.  Utilizing a slot-machine style user interface, Urbanspoon presents you with three variables – location, cuisine, and price.  You can lock any or all of them, then shake your phone.  The unlocked categories will be randomized, and a restaurant fitting the criteria will pop up.  You can then see the percentage of people who like the restaurant, get directions, or call the restaurant with the push of a button.  Additionally, you can read user reviews or look at a menu.

If you are completely unsure of your dining options, you can search by distance from you, or browse by a handful of other filters.  Furthermore, you can even search by word.  By searching for steak, Urbanspoon will pull up the top 10 steakhouses in the area, the 10 closest steakhouses, and the number of steakhouses in each nearby neighborhood.  Urbanspoon is a fantastic restaurant finding application that is great for people who frequently debate over where to go or the adventurous type looking to try new places.

Hungry! Shoplist

Hungry! Shoplist is for the always dedicated, yet sometimes forgetful food shopper.  This app will allow you to make a fully customizable shopping list with little effort.  You can sort through the preloaded list by food group of alphabetically.  Additionally, you can add specific items you frequently purchase to the main selection pool.  By checking an item, you add it to your list.  Once you go shopping, simply pull up your list.  Once you add the item to your physical cart, select it on your list and it will disappear.  Hungry! Shoplist is simple to use, and will ensure that you get everything on your list without skipping over that small, yet consequential ingredient.  Download if you want an easy to use grocery shopping list.

Happy Hours

We can all agree that there are few things more disheartening then showing up at a bar after a hard day of work only to realize happy hour ended 10 minutes ago.  Never again.  Happy Hours is a phenomenal app that will ensure your happy hour is just that.  This app will display all the current happy hour specials for your current location and time.  For each specific restaurant, the exact special is listed (2 for 1 domestic beers, for example) as well as the ending time of the special and the restaurant’s distance from you.  By selecting a resteraunt, you can see the percentage of people who like its happy hour or vote on it yourself.  Additionally, you can call the restaurant or pull it up on google maps.  If you want to go to a specific area, you can view all the happy hour locations on a map.  You can also filter the list of resteraunts by location, time of special, and type of cuisine.  Bonus feature – ability to sort by features, such as outdoor seating, live entertainment, pitcher specials, etc…)  Happy Hours is very easy to use, and I highly suggest it for anyone looking to enjoy a happy hour.

cab4me

cab4me is a cool app that will seamlessly get you inside of a cab as quick as possible.  This app will search for all the cab depots within a 10 mile radius of your current location, and list the possibilities with their distance from you and a rating.  By selecting a company, you can see what services they offer, payment options, available cars (or limos if you’re feeling it), or you can simply call the company.  You can also view your recent called companies, as well as a list of your favorites.  Bonus feature – if you don’t know where you are, that’s ok, as your GPS will notify the cab company with your location.  Download cab4me if you want to maximize the efficiency of using taxis.

Bars & Clubs

If your looking for a particular type of bar, Bars & Clubs is the app for you.  Whether you want to sing some karaoke on Friday after work, hit a gentleman’s club Saturday night, or catch the game Sunday afternoon, Bars & Clubs has you covered with 18 categories to choose from.  Once you select a category, you’re presented with a list of possibilities, each with an address and distance from your current location.  By choosing a bar, you can get directions via google maps, call the bar, or share your selection with a friend.  The one thing this app is missing is a rating system.  Bars & Clubs is a great app for whatever you’re getting into on a Saturday night.
