Line of 4

Line of 4 is a take on the popular game Connect-4.  If you’ve never played, the goal of the game is to get four markers of your color in a row before your opponent does – its essentially a two dimensional version of Tic Tac Toe.  Line of 4 has three difficulty options, with the hardest one presenting a rel challenge.  Additionally, you can play against another person locally, or over the internet.  For online play, you must create a free account or you can link it with your Facebook account.  A nice bonus feature is the ability to choose the color of your pieces.  Line of 4 does everything you would want from a Connect-4 app, and should be downloaded by all fans of the game.

Chess.com – Play and Learn Chess

Chess.com – Play Chess & Learn is one of the mot extensive apps on the Android market, as it contains everything you could possibly want that’s related to history’s most tactical game.  It has all the basics you would expect from a chess app; the ability to play against the computer, against a local opponent, or against someone online.  You can adjust the computer’s difficulty based on the time it will take between moves, allowing you to fine tune the computer to your own abilities.

Now where Chess.com shines is in its teaching aspects.  You can play though a wide variety of tactical scenarios, and the computer will tell you if you used the optimal strategy.  Additionally, the app grants you access to a video library of lessons that range from beginners to advanced, and from opening sequences to endgame tactics.  Each video has commentary that explains what is happening and why.  By signing up for a free account, the app will store your info and ranking, while linking you to an account on chess.com.  As a free app, this is much less expensive and more friendly then a chess class or tutor.  Chess.com is a phenomenal app for chess players of all skill levels, as you can tailor the content to your exact needs.  So whether your learning what a castle is, or if your on your way to becoming the next Grandmaster, this app will help get you there.

Tic Tac Toe

Tic Tac Toe by Optime Software is the best Tic Tac Toe app for Android.  First and foremost, the User Interface is very smooth, as the efforts that went into the design are readily apparent.  The game allows you to play against another local player, or the computer, which has three difficulty levels.  You can type in your name as well as your opponents, choose X or O, and decide who goes first or if it will switch off.  While these settings seem very standard, they are not all offered by other Tic Tac Toe games.  Once the settings are set, you play the game on sharp-looking chalkboard with a scoreboard on the bottom.  Tic Tac Toe is a great game to keep you occupied when you don’t have a pen and paper.

Othello Reversi

Othello Reversi is an app for the classic game where you try to capture your opponents pieces by sandwiching them between your own.  It is the strategic combination of checkers and dots.  This game is a lot of fun, and always challenging.  In the app, you can play against the computer, play locally against a friend, or play a stranger over the internet.  The one shortcoming is a lack of difficulty options.  However, the ability to play over the internet more than makes up for this, as its significantly more fun to beat up on a real person.  The online play is currently under development, but expect to see improvements in the coming updates, such as online rankings.  An innovative feature that cannot be fully appreciated until you play the game is the replay move button.  Unlike most of the games on the market, Othello Reversi makes you think about each move you’re making.  This is a great game for those who enjoy strategically dominating the competition.
